PET extrusion

In PET (polyethylene terephthalate) extrusion coating, a layer of molten PET is applied to paper or cartonboard to add specific properties to the material. PET extrusion provides good barrier properties and makes the material strong, durable and heat-resistant, among other things.

PET extrusion gives the material a moisture and grease barrier and makes it suitable for use in ovens. PET also has excellent clarity, making it suitable for packaging applications where product visibility is important.

To coat the substrate, the paper or cardboard is passed through a coating machine. PET resin is melted and extruded through a die. A thin layer of molten PET is then applied to the material to create a coating. The layer is cooled and solidifies, creating a laminated structure.

PET is a recyclable material, but coated materials can cause problems during recycling because the different layers have to be recycled separately. Solutions are constantly being sought to improve the recyclability of materials with PET extrusion layers and make packaging more environmentally friendly.
