Dispersion coating
Dispersion coating is a process in which a thin layer of dispersed material is applied to the paper or cartonboard. The coating forms a protective and functional layer on the substrate.
A dispersion coating creates barrier properties. It makes the paper and cartonboard grease and moisture resistant and provides an oxygen barrier and UV protection. This extends the shelf life of the packaged products and protects them from environmental factors. It also adds functionality, such as heat resistance or improved adhesion of the material. Dispersion coating can also serve aesthetic purposes, enhancing the visual appeal of the packaging with a gloss, matt or textured effect.
Dispersion coating is produced using water-based dispersion technology. Water-based dispersion layers are often considered more environmentally friendly than solvent-based options. Dispersion coating uses less plastic and allows for faster repulping (of cardboard with a barrier coating) through standard recycling.
